Subject: [!] Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld
It is time once again for the Netter's Dinner @ MacWorld. This is the
last of three calls for reservations. Feel free to invite your friends.
> We can still use nominations for stupid awards for the show. It'll be
> an action-packed hastily-organized nightmare which should be fun to
> watch if you are a sadist. ;)
MacWorld is Wednesday, January 5 through Saturday, January 8. The dinner
will be held Friday the 7th at the Hunan on Sansome at Broadway at 7:00
after the show. We will meet in the lobby of Moscone Hall at 6:00 (the time
the show ends) and will begin the walk to the restaurant at 6:30. It can be
cold, so bring your coat. It's about 15 blocks (if that) and only takes
about 20 minutes to walk. It's quite a sight seeing a line of net.geeks
wandering across town, but of course geeks are tame in San Francisco. ;)
Dinner should start around 7:00 and there will be a no-host bar available
before and after dinner.
The buffet won by a narrow margin and I was able to get assurances that the
meal would be up to the standards of the sit down meal last year. It will
be cheaper too, at only $14 a head, and there should be more food available
too. We'll be charged per our reservation count though, so don't RSVP if you
can't come. I'll be taking names and numbers of no-shows!
Our awards show will frivolous and silly, in true Usenet tradition, but we
need more categories and nominees or I will be forced to do it all myself
and the fun will wear thin quickly.
If anyone is bringing a portable printer, I could print labels off my
PowerBook and we could have email address nametags for the affair. How
totally geeky, eh?
For that matter, if you have a PowerBook I recommend bringing it, as I hope
to set a record for the largest all-PowerBook Bolo game. We'll be running
PhoneNet and LocalTalk wiring (I have a conversion cable so we can link the
two and put people on whichever side they are equipped for), so feel free to
bring whatever connectors you have, as long as they are not terminated end
connectors (since we need to hook people together and only 2 people can be
the ends). If you have extra connectors then bring them, as there are
always problems and more is better.
As usual, this is a gala affair, so dress casual. ;)
Tell your friends and acquaintances. I will be accepting reservations up
until Wednesday night.

Subject: [*] 3-Button Power 2.5.1
This is version 2.5.1 dated November 1993 of the "3-Button Power" control
panel, for use with Mouse Systems' A3 Mouse and A3 Trackball. It's supposed
to work on all Macs (I tested it on my brand new Duo 250/DuoDock and a
Quadra 840AV running Sys7.1), however it brings no new feature w.r.t.
version 2.0. The mouse is fine (optical mouse, very comfortable) but the
software is very poor, much inferior IMHO to Logitech's MouseKey.
Enjoy, nevertheless. Note that I'm not the author of the software, just a
user.

application which we will be writing soon. I would appreciate all input on
this system. Please E-Mail to either DarrylW4 (on AOL) or darrylw4@aol.com
(from the InterNet). This stack is not protected so that people can hack
around the scripts. If you make changes however, I would like to see your
work.
REQUIREMENTS:
Macintosh which could run this stack in the background
HyperCard 2.0 or better
Almost any AT compatible modem
An available line with touch-tone dialing
Numeric pager(s)
DESCRIPTION:
This stack allows the user to set-up auto pages. These "alarms" could dial
any number and send any message. These alarms are activated by at a certain
time by either day (S,M,T,W,T,F,S) or a date.
(We also hid a couple of Easter Eggs in there for those who like to search.)
HELP:
There is basic help in the stack (new in version 0.4). If there are any
questions or help issues, contact me by voice, fax or E-mail.
HISTORY:
0.1 Started with just the basics
0.2 Clean-up of scripts and interface
0.3 Addition of the Date Option, fixxed multiple page problem
0.4 Addition of Help -- from AOL forum leader comment
FEES:
This stack is free, provided you send me a quick message. I want all the
feedback that I can possibly get before we create the final application.

Subject: [*] Renote Access (Summary)
Thanks to all of those who responded to my inquiry regarding remote access.
Special thanks to Alan Hewat, Bruce Goldstein, Matthew Ahrens, Subbarayudu
Darisipudi and Dennis D. Davison.
The results are summarized below.
>Is there an A/B switching device available that will automatically switch
>to the modem for incoming calls or is there another solution to the A/B
>situation (short of always having to switch back and forth each day)?
Mixed reviews here. Some suggested manual switching (which I wanted to
avoid). There are auto-switching devices, but no on responding had
experience with them.
>Is it best to purchase a modem capable of booting the system or should I
>leave my system on and just turn off the monitor (or leave the monitor on,
>too)?
Suggestion here was to go with PowerKey/PowerKey Remote for turning the CPU
on/off. If not and the host CPU is to stay powered, it has been suggested
that the monitor be turned off.
>Should I go with ARA or Timbuktu?
Most of the respondents explained that there is a difference between these
two apps.
Alan Hewat reprinted a previous post:
>I use ARA and have tried ScreenLink and Timbuktu, which is similar but
>(much) more expensive and (a little) more powerful.
>
>Neither ScreenLink nor Timbuktu are meant to replace ARA. You can
>use them without ARA, but you can also connect with them through ARA.
>They allow you to see and control the desktop of another Mac over
>Appletalk or a modem connection (or even ethernet). With a 14.4k
>modem they are quite usuable when you get used to the slow screen
>re-drawing and mouse movement.
>
>ARA is different. It allows you to connect to appletalk via a modem.
>Then you can mount the disk of the remote Mac on your local Mac's
>desktop using system 7 filesharing. You still have to transport files
>over a relatively slow modem, but you can use applications on the
>local Mac to edit them etc, which is usually much faster than
>transmitting the quickdraw screen re-drawing via the modem.
>
>ARA is extremely useful if you want access to files on your remote
>Mac. If you put Appletalk on your Unix machines, you can also manage
>and edit Unix files remotely. You can simultaneously connect a terminal
>emulator (Versaterm) through ARA. Apple have announced ARA 2 and
>an ARA server nubus card that will serve up to 4 remote users - you
>can put up to 4 such cards in nubus slots in the server Mac.
>
>So get ScreenLink - at $30 its a great deal - but think about getting
>ARA as well. (If you need to see the remote screen in color or to
>connect to PCs, you'll need Timbuktu instead of ScreenLink).
I might add that it has been further explained to me that ARA works like an
extension of the MacOS, whereas the other programs operate on top of the
MacOS at both locations and since they transmit quickdraw screens, they are
slower and clumsier than ARA.
Hope this helps others as well. I will now embark on the expensive and time
consuming process of trying to setting something up.
Cheers!

connected to their own virtual ports and when a call comes in or goes
out the appropriate virtual port gets connected to the actual modem
port. The Line Manager that establishes the connection between actual
and virtual ports is connected to the actual port all the time. This
works fine when one just uses ARA and fax, but not when one also uses
FirstClass and InterSLIP. The latter programs complain that the port
is not free. My idea was to connect FirstClass and InterSLIP to the
virtual data port. In case of InterSLIP this is straightforward, but
I have no idea how to do this with FirstClass.
I assume I should use the Comm Toolbox with the Serial Tool
(alternatives are: Apple Modem Tool, AppleTalk ADSP Tool, Versaterm
Driver Tool and Versaterm Telnet Tool). Correct so far ? Having
selected the Serial Tool, the options for handshake are: XOn/XOff,
none, DTR, CTS and DTR+CTS. Which one to take knowing that modem
settings that worked in the past are: hardware handshake, auto speed
and DTR hangup ?

If this happened to me, I would be more inclined to suspect my own disk

of the quality of the typefaces included? A blurb in the Feb. 94 MACWORLD

I ask because I was previously disappointed by another inexpensive font

TIA for any comments you may have. If I get a few responses and there's

I've been using DeltaGraph Pro 3 for less than a month.
I like the features alot. Problem is, tho, that even with
gobs of memory allocated to this package, menu options
get greyed out for no apparent reason, the slides cannot
be properly placed in order, and as the presentation document
increases in size, the file eventually becomes corrupt or
the application quits with a Type 1 error whenever I try to
edit the document. IMHO, these are not good things for an end
user to experience.
So whenever I'm baffled I turn to the experts on Info-Mac,

I am running Deltagraph on an LC III with System 7.1 with RAM

What can the matter be? Are there some serious problems with

That is because the Finder cleverly puts a ASCII 13 code after "Icon". The 13
code corresponds to the return key. You cannot add a return character to the
end
of the name because the Finder "thinks" you want to confirm the name you
entered.

Subject: Followup to Tales of Woe
Well, I now have my little Mac back. I took it to a different dealer
who is a licensed Apple tech person and an Applied Engineering dealer
as well. It took him less than 3 hours to get the problematic TransWarp
accelerator board working in a klutzy way; less than a day to figure out
that the local yokels who had installed it first-time-around and sold me
a hard drive had misconnected the hard drive.
I am still a long way from pleased with Applied Engineering, but I can
now honestly say I have a 16 MB SE running under system 6, which ain't
bad, and it does fly. Well, it flew before, but it flew into brick
walls and crashed. Now it steers a bit better.
It still has some glitches which almost led me to post a note about
More Tales of Woe--at first, I couldn't get Photoshop, GIF Converter,
SuperPaint, or other programs that do cute things with memory and disk
space inorder to do their thing, to run. This did not please me. But
later, while running under MultiFinder in order to play in the big big
memory field, I discovered that those programs run just fine as long as
one is in MultiFinder instead of the old MonoFinder. And of course I
was (finally) planning to actually USE the MultiFinder now that there's
16 MB to sprawl out in, and it probably didn't occur to AE that anyone
would be so accustomed to life within the MonoFinder that they'd start
off from there. But old habits borne of a shortness of memory, they do
die hard.
OTHER THOUGHTS, MAINLY UNRELATED...
1. About those 3M disks--yeah, pretty horrible, but so are Verbatims
and even Maxells in the 1.44 MB capacity variety. Frankly, I have yet
to find the MFM-style disks of any manufacturer to have the same solid
dependability of the GCR 800K disks. I still own the very first disk I
ever bought, and while I admit I don't use it often, I wrote a whole book
on it and booted from it until bigger systems and dual-drive SE's made
that unnecessary and impossible. Somtimes I wish Apple had come out with
a high-density GCR-based disk (but on the other hand I like the compati-
bility of my SuperDrive).
2. My girlfriend's Amiga has that A-MAX II emulator on it; she's been
running Mac programs in black and white with it for a year or so now.
It uses the Mac Plus's 128K ROMs and ports to the Amiga's own Motorola
processor and SIMMS, which in this case means it thinks it's a 33 MHz
ok030-based Mac Plus. Well, they sent a note saying they're upgrading the
emulator so as to provide color. She'll need system 7.1 with 32 bit
QuickDraw, she told me, and was asking me about what all that means and
how it works, and as I pontificated, it occurred to me to wonder just
how, INDEED, they're getting color out of a machine backed by those
128 K chips? There's no ROM upgrade involved. Hey, if she can get
color out of this setup, why can't I get color out of my SE's 256 K
ROMS (which also don't know from color QuickDraw)? Anyone got a clue?

Currently, it's so frustrating to use I'm about to take it in for

The installer states (for my Italian System) error -43 (file/folder not found)

I have fixed the problem removing the resource "fld#" in the Installer Script

I hope you are the Apple employee dealing with these problems. If not, can

Thank you for your Link. This is actually not a bug, but to be expected for
installations for English systems. Since you were using the English version

You must purchase MacTCP 2.0.4, either from Apple for about $60 or
as included with my book, Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh, for about
$30. The version that comes with my book is actually 2.0.2, but there's
a free updater on ftp.tidbits.com in:

Well, to quote the old Certs commercial, "Stop! You're both right!"
It all depends on how you exit from the Find dialog. If you close the
dialog box with the close box or the cancel button, it works like Claude
said. OTOH, if you just click on your document window and leave the dialog
box on the screen, it works like Mel said.
When I run up against Mel's problem, I just hit the tab key in the Find
dialog, which (per Mac convention :-) cycles you among the text entry boxes
in the dialog box. The Find dialog only has one text entry box, so one tab
selects the previous find string.

Subject: NEC 5FGe and Quadra 650
I'm having trouble running DPI-on-the-fly (Version 2.5) with an NEC 5FGe on
a Quadra 650 (System 7.1). I've got the same monitor on a Centris 650
(System 7.1) and DPI-on-the-fly runs beautiful; I can switch between 3
resolutions without any problems. In both cases the adaptor between the
monitor and the computer is an NEC FG/Mac 640x480.
When I boot up the Quadra 650, the system tells me that the extensions have
been turned off and I can't run DPI-on-the-fly, not to mention the other
extensions. I imagine there is some difference between the video on the
Centris 650 and the Quadra 650 and that NEC has to play catch-up with their
versions of DPI-on-the-fly, but there must also be some kind of problem
with the wiring of the FG/Mac adaptor as far as the Quadra 650 goes. What
is the problem and when or how can it be solved?

One thing you didn't note in your tests, Mel, is that Nisus has configurable
scrolling. There's a Scrolling option in the Preferences that lets
you set the maximum scroll speed. I don't much mess with it, since
I would never use the arrow key or scroll arrow to scroll through
an entire document when I can flip to the end with option-down arrow.
I don't know what your setting was set to, but you might want to up
it and see if that allows Nisus to compete even better in the scrolling
department. :-)

Subject: Q: Missing SCSI drive, "partition map invalid"?
Excuse me folks,
Last night I had a relatively routine system crash. I rebooted from
inside MacsBug and was greeted with the dreaded "Where's your boot floppy?"
icon.
HD Setup (7.0) doesn't recognize the drive as initialized. It can
test it and says that the disk is either "not initialized or partition map
invalid".
Disk First Aid (7.0) doesn't recognize the drive as there either,
so it can't do anything.
Norton Utilities (2.0) initially doesn't recognize the drive. Then
I force it to open SCSI 0 and guess the parameters for the HFS and it is
able to open it, but not mount it. Norton Disk Doctor fixes some trivial
items, but the file system still remains unmounted.
I'm running a Mac SE/30, 4 MB RAM, 80 MB internal hard disk, System
7.1. No "exotic" or "excessive" numbers of extensions.
This is the first time this sort of thing has happened in years.
Can anyone give me any pointers/advice/PD utilities/descriptions of
payware that can help me out?
Any help will be very much appreciated.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the Quadra 605 and LC 475 aka
Performa 475 or 476, depending on where you shop? I know the LC is aimed
more at the educational/home market, but the specs appear to be virtually
identical.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: startup screen weirdness/help!
if you can help, please
mail direct.........
--------------------------- ---------------------------
yesterday, the pb started doing somethig weird:
the extension icons on startup now come on AFTER the startup screen
but before the desk top.
this happened immediately after i had restarted the pb and it
tried to re-initiate a shiva network connexion i'd deliberately cut.
the shiva restart happened before the icons came on, but on the desktop
once i cancelled the network restart, the icons danced across
the desktop! and restart proceeded as per usual.
now i've got this delayed ext icon start and it ain't pretty: 13 or
so icons parading across a grey field. yick.
what i've tried:
-disk doctor
-pram zapping
-desktop rebuilding
-all extensions etc on
-all off (with extension manager)
-holding com/shift key down on restart.
none of this has changed a thing. this did happen once before - before i
had extension manager. dropping that ext in solved the problem. (it's
version 2) but it ain't working this time.
thanks for any help
please feel free to mail me direct at

Subject: thin grey line FAQ
In response to melczer@sfu.ca FAQ on the thin grey line, here is the answer
>From the archives - info-mac/per/underground-mac-v1-06:
"Q: I just purchased my first Mac and my 14" Apple monitor has a thin gray
line running horizontally through the screen. My dealer says this is
normal. Can it be?
A: This is one of the most frequently asked questions from new Mac owners,
and one I thought everybody had figured out by now. Since it's almost
Christmas I may as well explain this for all the new Mac owners.
That thin line is actually a piece of wire, and it's only present on Sony
Trinitron tubes, which the Apple 14" monitor uses. The wire is a support
for a very fine metal grid (screen) which aligns the red, green, and blue
signals from the electron gun in the back of the tube. This grid is called
the aperture grill and is largely responsible for the excellent image
produced by Trinitron tubes.
Incidentally, the larger monitors that use Trinitron tubes, such as the 16"
and 21" models, have two wires, one near the top and one near the bottom.
And yes, Trinitron TV sets also have these wires."

I heard of this problem from some of our users when they went to 7.1. It
would appear that Apple has finally de-implemented a couple of calls that
they
said would go away 'someday' way back in the 6.x or earlier days. The
error just means that the call failed but it is harmless as far as I can
tell.
I patched that stuff out of the source and recompiled it. I can probably
mail you a binhexed version if you really need it, tho it might have other
problems with the higher level macs - there was an interim version of Kermit
that fixed some odd problem and I'm not sure I have that fix in my version.
The alternative is to just ignore it for now and/or wait for the next
release which is coming (and has been for a couple of years....) RSN. Or
maybe one of the binary-patch gurus out there can whip up a patch..???

Subject: Work shift scheduling software?
Hi everyone,
A friend of mine works in a bank, and will soon be in charge of setting up
the work schedules for the tellers. This will entail fixed blocks of hours,
making sure that any one teller won't work more than a given number of hours
per week, making sure that there are at least two or three tellers on duty
at all times, things like that. There are about 20 tellers total...
Is there any application that will work better than her bank's present system
of paper and pencil on graph paper? She's only recently been using a Mac, so
hopefully something that isn't too technical/complicated, please...
Thanks,
